A continuum of asynchronous states in cerebral cortex networks, and how they determine responsiveness

AbstractThe awake brain is known to display asynchronous (AS) states during periods of attention and arousal, but the responsiveness properties of such states remain unclear. Here, we investigate this question using computational models of spiking networks of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, mimicking recurrently-connected networks in layer 2/3 of the cerebral cortex. The networks can generate a continuum of AS states, but with different responsiveness characteristics. By using a mean-field model to infer the dynamic properties of the system, we find that there are two families of AS states, which we call "underdamped" (UD) and "overdamped" (OD). Responsiveness is maximised at the transition between OD and UD states, which identifies a "working point" that may present advantageous computational properties.
